June NF PB Pop Up • Last activity 10/Aug

This is a peer critique group for non-fiction picture book manuscripts.  Picture book writers submit a single manuscript at the start of the event, then exchange critiques of one another’s work.  Manuscripts can be at any stage of development. Please add in the notes what stage your manuscript is and what you'd like your colleagues to focus on. Each group member critiques all the manuscripts posted. Depending on the group size, you will be responsible for critiquing 3-7 manuscripts. We will have 18 days to critique each others' stories. Please submit your critiques during this time period. We all understand that life sometimes gets in the way but your opinion is important to your critique partners.

After the critique deadline, we will have an optional debrief phone call. The purpose of the phone call is to ask any additional questions, and also just to get to know each other a little better. The exact time of the phone call will be determined later, based on the group members’ decision to hold one.

What we're looking for in members

Participants should share one manuscript, plus an accompanying submission note that includes: a short pitch, and what stage the work is at for you (early draft or farther along), plus any questions you're looking for answers on. For peer critiques, participants should provide gentle, deeply thought out constructive critiques; overall comments on the big-picture plot, external (action) arc, internal (emotional) arc, and what is working well as well as what needs to be strengthened.
