But how does one achieve this? Attendees will learn a variety of strategies and tools to break away from predictability and gain confidence in writing in one’s own unique way. Whether it’s the invention of new words, the creative presentation of existing words, the vulnerability of imaginative leaps on the page, or the use of white space and punctuation to impact suspense and tension, poets will study mentor poems and apply specific techniques to add depth and drama to their own poems, moving the reader ever closer to the “unexpected inevitable.”

Critique Opportunity

Additional charge. This allows the writer time to absorb the notes and formulate follow-up questions. During the 30-minute consultation, Irene will use these notes to guide the discussion. She will offer specific suggestions about developing, strengthening, and enhancing individual poems. For poem-as-picture book submissions, she will also provide additional thoughts and feedback to strengthen your manuscript as a whole. Irene Latham is a grateful creator of many novels, poetry collections, and picture books, but her first love is poetry. Her poetry books include: Can I Touch Your Hair? Poems of Race, Mistakes, and Friendship, a Charlotte Huck Honor, and African Town, winner of the 2023 Scott O'Dell Award, both co-written with her poetic-forever-friend Charles Waters. Winner of the 2016 Lee Bennett Hopkins Promising Poet Award, her solo poetry titles include The Museum on the Moon, This Poem is A Nest, Dear Wandering Wildebeest, and others. Her latest adventure is co-curating poetry anthologies including The Mistakes That Made Us, If I Could Choose a Best Day, and the forthcoming For the Win. Irene lives with her husband on a lake in rural Alabama, where their favorite neighbors are a pair of bald eagles. Read hundreds of Irene's poems for free at irenelatham.com.
